Ooh look - a sparkly new blog!

I have no idea why I've decided to start a blog - perhaps it's an age thing. Kind of like an interweb midlife crisis and let's face it - cheaper than a sports car!

So what's it all going to be about then?

Well it'll just be a collection of my mutterings and thoughts about things - but mainly my bikes and MTB in general.

So sit back, relax and wait while I think of something you'll want to read!!

  1. Hi Chris. Stumbled on your blog via Bike Radar where I was looking for pointers to doing up a Carrera Blast I've been given. It seems you re something of an expert on the subject! I know next to nothing about bikes but figured it would be an opportunity to learn.I'm looking for some pointers on suitable upgrades. No more than 80mm forks I gather but do you recall the length and type of steerer? Any other advice gratefully received. Cheers (from another Chris W!)

  2. hi Chris - thanks for reading.
I'm no expert by any means! I can't remember what the steerer length was, but I do know I had to take quite a bit off it. It's a straight 1 1/8th diameter.
If you look at the photo's on the build thread I think there's a set of spacers underneath and then about the same sticking out of the top which I ended up cutting off.
I'll give it a rough measure tonight when I get home and let you know.
    Chris

    1. Excellent - thanks Chris. I'm keeping an eye out for second hand 80mm forks but they're all fetching silly money at the moment. Ironically, I've got a set on an old bike but I don't want to give it up at present!

    2. Worth putting a WTB post on some of the local MTB Facebook pages - can get a better deal than eBay sometimes.

  3. Hi Chris. Headtube length on the frame is 110mm. I cut the steerer tube on the forks to around 200mm and have 40mm of spacers and 50mm of stem.
Could probably lower it but seems to be OK for him. Also means I can put the forks on a bigger frame when he grows out of it. If you want any pictures with dims let me know.

    1. Hi Chris. Excellent - thanks for your help. I've got a stand coming tomorrow so battle will shortly commence. I'll shout when I get stuck! Incidentally, is your lad still on his carrera? I'm hoping after going to all this trouble it fits him for some considerable time!

Yes he's still on it and hopefully will be for another year or so.
